17 July In a masterful performance of boxing technique, Melchor Cob Castro totally outclassed Oswaldo Guerrero over 12 rounds to win both the NABF and CA minifly titles. Neither fighter was hurt, and Castro was hit maybe a total of 15 times the whole bout. He wasn't running though. Castro used a stiff jab, straight rights, good combinations, solid in-fighting, and footwork to keep the hard punching Guerrero confused, frustrated, and outclassed. The official shutout scores read 120-108, 120-109, and 118-110. Castro, 31 years old, looked strong and mature in tonights fight. Very impressive against a solid fighter in Guerrero. Also, fly 10rds- Rafael Chavez Wtko6 Javier Torres; light 8rds- Zenon Moreno Wdq6 Jesus Moreno (Moreno cut in 6th and unable to continue. Instead of going to the scorecards, the Mexico City Boxing Commission follows its stupid rule of giving the fighter who can't continue a DQ win. This applies to accidental head butts). light 4rds- Ernesto Olarte draw Ricardo Juarez. light 4rds- Miguel Huerta Wtko2 Aldo Romero.

17 July Tonight in Mexico City's Arena Coliseo Oswlado Guerreo and Melchor Cob Castro battle 12 rounds in the Mini-Fly division. I'm expecting a solid bout, with Guerrero answering Castro's wily left-handed attack with powerful right. Later this evening I'll post a recap as well as results from the undercard.

Jorge Lacierva, the talented flyweight at 14-2-3(10), looks to have stepped in a heap of trouble when he challenges Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson the second Friday of August on ESPN2. Probable odds post "Too Sharp" at 50-1, while I think in reality 4-1 is more appropriate. Lacierva is a "live underdog", but looks to be in too deep against too sharp.

Any of you who catch the Vargas vs Marquez fight tonight I'd appreciate a review and results on the message boards as I will not have a chance to see the fight. If Marquez wasn't so easy to hit I'd have to lean his way, but his D is horrible and he gets busted up. I have yet to be wowed by the brash Vargas but don't see him having to go the distance tonight. Vargas via TKO round 6.

14 July Light punching Middleweight Leonel Ortiz21-5(8) had enough pop to knockout Urbano Gurrola 18-5(14) at 1:48 of the 4th round to retain the Fecarbox Title. Gurrola no longer seems able to compete when he steps up to decent competition. Also, 10 rds bantam: Francisco Mateos Wtko5 Edwin Zarate. 8 rds S.Feather: Fernando Trejo Wtko4 Juan Sarabia. 6 rds middle: Miguel Sacasa Wtko2 Gerardo Gomez. 6 rds feather: Gamaliel Diaz W6 Cesar Jesus Rivera.

If you didn't get the chance to see the Chavez v. Jakubowski bout last Saturday you didn't miss much. But it was a perfect example of Mexico's worst referee in action - Gelasio Perez. Jako was dropped in the 4th with a left hook and like a giant bird protecting its baby chicks, Gelasio goes flying in with arms waving frantically screaming "Se Acabo!Se Acabo!" "It's Over! It's Over" No count, no checking to see Jako's reaction, nothing. Perez consistantly loses control and perspective of the action in the ring. He's a nice guy outside the ring, always smiling and glad-handing and easy to approach. And I've talked with him about this, even offering to teach him the numbers one thru ten. All to no avail! If you see Gelasio Perez working a fight a solid bet is the bout ends in TKO.

10 July Gerson Guerrero,112lbs, detonated two explosive left hooks on Nicarauguan Antonio Gonzalez. The second stretched Gonzalez for the count at :39 of round 10 in a scheduled 12 rounder for the vacant Fecarbox Title. The first explosion landed in the 3rd round, which had Gonzalez doing a dance, following the two opening heats which split on my score card. The tough, game, and talented Antonio Gonzalez was in the fight up until the fatefull left hook of the 10th. Guerrero was at times frustrated and had noticable swelling around the right eye. Rounds 4 thru 9 we difficult to score, with Gonzalez pressing the action and Guerrero landing effective but sparce counters. However, Guerrero has the best left in Mexico, maybe in North America, and he knows it. Tonight it didn't let him down. Also, after a crab-like 45 seconds Agustin Luna opened up and knocked Francisco Garcia into the ropes and pressed the attack. Unfortunately the referee was just as surprised as Garcia by the sudden onslought and stepped in calling a halt to the 10 round flyweight bout at 1:02 of the first round. Bad call ref!! feather 6rds- Gilberto Martinez W6 Miguel Galindo; bantam 4rds- Ramon Campos W4 Oscar Pineada; bantam 4rds- Mario Rodriguez Wdq4 Manuel Cuevas (Cuevas turned his back and spit out his mouthpiece - sounds like a TKO win to me, but it was ruled a disqualification.)

7 July In a shameful mismatch Jorge Lacierva115lbs, knocked bum Pedro Barrientos down 3 times in the 1st for a stoppage. Lacierva is a talented fighter and should be embarrassed for getting in the ring with old and fat (and possibly drunk the way he stumbled around) Barrientos. Also, welter 6rds: Davis Suarez Wko1 Jorge Gloria; light 4rds: Marco Antonio Mateos Wdq1 Miguel Reyes (the fight was stopped after MATEOS was cut by an ACCIDENTAL head butt, as quickly and correctly called by the referee. It's beyond me why the Mexico City Boxing Comm. has this automatic DQ rule on ACCIDENTAL head butts - much better to declare a no contest or technical draw within the first 3 rounds, later going to the score cards if a fighter can't continue from an ACCIDENTAL head butt). welter 4rds: Miguel Angel Flores Wtko2 Jesus Suarez; light 4rds: Lupe Lima draw4 Jose Luis Cuatle; feather 4rds: Adrian Pacheco Wtko2 Florencio Martinez; fly 4rds: Alfonso Lugo Wtko1 Memo Herrera.

Read in the local paper that Jesus "El Matador" Chavez, NABF 130lbs Champion and WBC #1 ranked contender is scheduled to face 41 year old Bruno Rabanales on July 31 in Chihuahua, Mexico. Bruno is a tough old dog who stays in the gym regularly, but hasn't won a fight since 1995. Hopefully Bruno's getting paid enough to get his nose fixed up, because it's already in bad shape and sure to be much worse following his date with Chavez.

Where else can you find this info on the net?? Only here - so how about a vote for Ballistic Boxeo.

4 July Lauro Lopez pulled out a split decision win over Tomas Rojas in an entertaining 6 round flyweight bout this afternoon in San Pablo Del Monte, Tlaxcala. This is a small farming community 30 minutes north of Pueblo,MX - in the shadows of the Popo Volcano. Over 1000 people were on hand for the festivities, which also included kids chasing greased pigs, arm-wrestling, rides, music, and excellent tacos.

Next Saturday at the Arena Coliseo Gerson Guerrero is scheduled in a 10 round bout vs Nicarauguan Antonio "Paloma" Gonzalez, who I'm hoping is not a refugee from Hurrican Mitch but a legit fighter. GG is a quick-fisted hard punching young fighter who needs another solid test(the first was Zihua Morales, GG by TKO 8). I see good things developing for this talented flyweight. The following Saturday, the 17th, his brother Oswaldo Guerrero takes on wily lefthander Melchor Cob Castro

.

Looks like Ricardo Lopez will return to action on the undercard of Gonzalez-Tszyu, oft delayed but now set for August 21 verus IBF 108lb holder Will Grisby. Can't say I'm familiar with Will Grisby, but I don't see Lopez having any problems with him. Can say, though, that's it's a shame Lopez is still an undercard fighter and not headlining these shows. Gonzalez was in the gym yesterday and didn't look too close to fighting weight to me(but we're still six weeks away), so we'll see if the WBC Superlightweight Title is finally settled on the 21st or not.

3 July Female Boxing made its debut tonight in Mexico City at the Arena Mexico with two 4 round bantamweight bouts on the six bout card. Despite the best efforts of the matchmaker to put on a weak supporting card, the lack of talent the women fighters showed was still obvious. None had anything approaching punching power, but at least they deserve credit for a basic knowledge of the game. The crowd seemed to enjoy it, and you could see the Boxing Commission breath a sigh of relief since nothing disasterous occured. I enjoy a good scrap, be it men or women, and hope the ladies talent pool increases. A better developed amatuer system seems in order to me. Gloria Rios W4 Maria Duran; Ana Maria Torres Wsplit4 Mariana Juarez (upset here as Juarez was touted as a prospect among the females). Later this month Promoter Raul Cruz has an all-ladies card scheduled for La Boom. Maybe there's 12 women to fill out a card in Mexico, but I haven't seen 'em yet. Also, feather 4rds: Armando Hernandez Wtko4 Antonio Ramos; minifly 6rds: Carlos Bouchan Wtko6 Sergio Lopez; minifly 8rds: Isaac Bustos Wko5 Rodrigo Garcia; light 10rds: Juan Carlos Juarez Wtko6 Marcos Bernal.

I've put a Message Board down below. Any thoughts or opinions you might have are welcome. The current question is whether Micheal Carbajal is any threat to the flashy young 108lbs. WBO Champ Jorge Arce. They are to meet July 31 on the Erick Morales PPV card from TJ. Arce looks to be the real thing; good power and quick hands. He's also the new clown prince - a Jorge Paez look-a-like. Unlike the other princessNaseem Hamed, Arce actually has some talent.

Dallas Superlightweight Juan Antonio Lopez had surgery on his left shoulder June 30 and is looking at a 4 to 6 month rehab. Lopez seperated the shoulder in round one of his ESPN2 fight on June 12 vs Juan Carlos Rodriguez. Doctors are telling Lopez that his left hook will be stronger than before, which should put fear in all fighters campaigning around 140lbs.

Other news, Julio Cesar Chavez is fighting on July 10th if anyone cares. His rival is to be Marty Jakubowski. Too bad the Mexican Legend can't find something better to do with his time.
